THE GAZETTE.

The immigration and emigration returns for the colony for January show the arrivals to be 2723 and the departures 1748. The arrivals were : From the United Kingdom, 322 ; New South Wales, 1606 ; Victoria, 609 ; Tasmania, 91 ; other places, 95 ; — total, 2723. The departures were : To the United Kingdom, 94- ; New South Wales, 1283 ; Victoria, 236 ; Tasmania, 95 ; other places, 40 ;— total, 1748. Four Chinese arrived and three departed. Mr William Henry Spackman, of Christohurch, has been appointed deputy-inspector of asylums, hospitals, and licensed houses in the colony under "The Lunatics Act 1882." W. H. S. Moorhouse is gazetted captain of D Battery, Wellington. The commission of Lieutenaut Whitely, of the Poneonby Naval Artillery Volunteers, Auckland, has been cancelled, he not having attended to the duties attached to the commission. Captain M'Nab, of Cr Battery, Invercargill, has resigned his commission ; also Captain Proudfoot, of B Battery, Dunedin. % His Excellency the Governor has consented to the trustees of the Auckland Savings Bank reducing the rate of interest to depositors to <H per cent, from July 1 last.
