A Currant Bush Borer.

A letter has come to hand from Mr W. C. Brown, of West Mosgiel, with a piece of currant bußh wood, the pith of which has been eaten out for about 4in, evidently by the larvre of either one of the borer beetles, or of a mothjudging from appearances, more probably the latter, — but the parcel contains no specimen of an insect, so that it is not easy to identify. There are several beetles in this colony whose larvco do considerable mischief in this way, and occasion the orchardist much trouble ; but in this case the writer is inclined to think the culprit ia the moth commonly called the " currant clear wing," of which he has had many specimens sent to him to identify from various districts, and amongst others from the province of Otago, and there iB no doubt that the pest is already getting very common in New Zealand wherever the currant iB grown, and will naturally be more likely to give most trouble in the cooler climates of the South Island.
