DUNEDIN SALES.

Messrs Donald Reid and t?a. leporfc as fol3ows:—We held the tbifa sale of the season's aeries at the Oddfellow*,' Hall, Rattray street, Dunedin, on Friday, the 2nd February IS9I. Our •catalogue Consisted of 1252 bales, and comprised <an excellent collection of medium wools. There were also several choice lots, and a fair sprinkling ;oi low-classed dingy, matted, and heavy wools. xherc was r brisk demand for all light-conditioied superior half bred and sound crossbred wools, and notwithstandingtheunfavourableftdv; ices received from London on the morning of the sale, this class evoked Very strong c67yuketflion. and fully maintained the values ru'.ing at the earlier sales. Medium quality half and crossbred wools were also in fair request up to market values, but prices were Vatner easier, and in order to effect gales a s- Jght reduction on late ruling prices had 'to be»ccepted ; but wherever owners' limits were ?n attcord with present market values, there was eittle difficulty in effecting salbs. Half and crossbred pieceß and locks in light condition were also in good request, and made faiv values. For lowclass stained and heavy wools, and for merino wools of all conditions^ the market was decidedly weaker, and sales of these sorts weVe hard to effect except at a considerable reduction in values ruling at our last sale. The total number of bales catalogued by the various brokers for this series amounted to 6092* Of the 1282 bales catalogued by us, 1082 bales were sold under the hammer, 148 were passed (bidding not realising Valuations or owners* reserves), and 52 bales were not offered, the full balance of the clips not having arrived at store in time to be shown. Our highest price for halfbreds was lOd, this price being obtained for the well-known brand JI in circle, belonging to Mr James Irvine, of Clinton, and the same price for the favourably known P brand, belonging to Mr James Prentice of Berwick. The Farmers' Agency Company (Limited) report having held their third sale of this season on Friday, February 2, in the presence of a large gathering of woolgrowers and a full attendance of buyers: The continued broken weather again interfered with the arrivals, several settlers in the interior not having finished shearing. Notwithstanding this the catalogues were fairly large and tallied up to about 6000 bales. The quality on the average generally was below that offered at last series — wool from Central Otago being earthy and badly grown, especially merinos. For these there was little or no demand, prices for what was sold ruling low, and some passed-in lots scarcely eliciting a bid. Crossbreds from the same quarter also ruled low, with but poor competition. On the other hand Southern-grown wools of good quality and colour were well competed for up to a point, but generally speaking prices for these ruled about Jd lower. This is due to the unsatisfactory reports from London, buyers having had their limits reduced by cable from Home during the last few days. Pieces and other odd lots were not in such good request as at the previous sales, also showing a decline of id to id per lb. Bidding to-day was spirited for particular sorts, such as very light and dry brightcoloured crossbreds and halfbreds, which brought prices up to those obtaining at the last sale ; all other sorts had less attention, and in most instances showed a decline of id compared with last sale's prices. Only on very rare occasions lots passed in at the previous sales brought the prices then offered. We submitted a catalogue of 1028 bales, all of which we placed with the exception of a few small lots of fellmongers' wool and one or two farmers' lots that had rather high reserves on, but which will doubtless be placed before the week is out. Greasy crossbred and halfbred super brought Bid to 9id ; extra light to medium to good, 7id to Bid ; inferior, sid to 7id ; ordinary greasy merino ranged from 4d to 7id. Messrs Wrioiit, Stephenson, and Co. report as follows:— For our third sale for the season, held at the Oddfellows' Hull on iMday afternoon, we catalogued 18S2 bales, of which 1858 were actually oflered, 24 bales Hot having reached the stores when buyers Were valuing, and consequently being held over until next sale on the 22nd inst. Of the remainder 1247 bales were sold under the hammer. Including 85 bales sold privately, the nnnjber df . bales disposed of since last auction is 1332. The attendance of buyers at to-day's sale was in every way satisfactory, but owing to the unfavourable advices lately received both by press and private cablegrams, there was an easier feeling throughout the sale. Bids did not come nearly so freely as at the second series of this seasons auctions, and prices, as compared with those ruling then, manifested great irregularity. The choicest halfbreds, crossbreds, and superfine merino wools ruled at rates on a par with those current three weeks ago to a shade better in one or two isolated cases, whilst on all other descriptions of fleece wool a decline of from 5 to 10 per cent, was apparent. Again, pieces, with the exception of the very fineßt (for which late rates were maintained), showed a decline of fully Id per lb. It will be observed from our catalogue printed below, that there were an unusually large number of lots passed in to-day. These for the most part consisted of ! medium and inferior wools, more or less dingy and otherwise out of condition, and as the prices offered appeared low in comparison with the expectation of vendors, in their absence we deemed it advisable to pass in the wools. As was only to be expected in the faco of adviceß from London (both press and private) received by cable yesterday, prices, generally speaking, were below those of last sale- at the same time not so much so as might at firat appear to be the case when one takes into consideration the fact that the quality of the wool was lower. Compared with labt sale, the bidding lacked animation, and most of the buyers seemed indifferent throughout the sales about purchasing heavy dirty crossbredo and pieces of all descriptions, while merino of similar quality met with even less competition. Messrs Stronacii Bros, and Morris report as follows :— Our third sale of the series was held on Friday last at the Oddfellows' Hall, when buyers were in full attendance, and competition for all bright and light-conditioned half and crossbreds was fully equal to that at previous sales — one line of the above class reaching 10|d, the top price for the season. All growers of wools of these grades and conditions must have been fairly well satisfied with the result of the auctions. Bidding for first crossbred pieces t clean and bright, was also quite up to expectations — as much as 7Jd being obtained for parcels of this description. All our lots passed at previous sale were disposed of at a slight advance, which, in the face of latest reports from London market, must be considered very satisfactory. Inferior pieces and heavy merino were not so readily placed, and showed a decline of Id per lb, and in some cases even more than this.
