UNEMPLOYED IN AMERICA.
The unemployed labour is becoming a troublesome factor in the body politic of the United States. The cry for woik or bread is heard from every quarter. In San Francjbco a meeting of citizens has been held and largo sums subscribed with a view to temporary relief, for there are 10,000 or more seeking occupation whereby they can procure food. It is proposed to put a large body of these on at work on the Golden Gate Park, paying them one dollar each at the close of each working day.
On January 12 a large crowd of unemployed men, accompanied by women, many carrying children in their arms, marched to the City Hall in Chicago and demanded work from the city. They were informed that there was no work, and they|only made threats. The leader said, ' ' We'll have work or we'll tear down the City Hall. Our families are suffering. We must have employment or bread." The police dispersed them.
Numerous outrages are the result ' of this poverty. In San Francisco footpads have become so numerous that special squads of police have beeruformed to deal with the evil.
