OUR VOLUNTEERS.
Tho Dunediu Rifle Companies paraded under Colonel Webb on Monday eveniDg. The parade coming so soon after the Christmag holidays was but a poor one, the total attendance being 119, made up as follows : — Garrison Bind, 12 ; City Guards, 30 ; North Dunedin Rifles, 4-1 ; Highlaud Rifles, 33 ; staff— Colonel Webb, Adjutant Milne, and Sergeant-majors Castle and Towler. The men were put through the new attack formation drill on tho Exhibition ground, and worked fairly well. They were too few in number for the drill to be effective, but still some insight was obtained by the men into the preliminary work of tho new formation practice.
The Hinemoa will be placed at the disposal of northern volunteers visiting the Rifle Association meeting at Christchurch.
The first instalment of 1000 Martini-Henry rifles is expected by the end of March. A difficulty has arisen with the contractors as to the test to be applied to the sighting.
