THE NEW ZEALAND ALPINE CLUB.
The New Zealand Alpine Club, formed a few years ago by a number of enthusiasts iv Christchurch and Dunedin, is now a flourishing institution with a world-wide reputation, and there can bo no doubt but that the work which the n; embers are now doing will be tho mcanß of bringing New Zealand prominently before the notice of thousands of mountaineers and others in the mother country, America, and the Continent of Europe. The club has members scattered pretty well all over the world, and includes in its ranks some of the leading scientists of the day, and no fewer than 19 of the leading members of tho English Alpine Club. Indeed, both the English Alpine Club and the Royal Geographical Society have taken a keen interest in the organisation of the New Zealand club, which has every prospect of a successful career.
At the annual meeting, which was held the other day at Sumner, Sir Joseph Hooker was elected a member, and the following officebearers were chosen for the ensuing year :— President, Captain F. W. Hutton; vice-presi-dents — Hon. J. B. Acland, Messrs J. Meeson, J. H. Baker, and Malcolm Ross; honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr M. J. Dixon ; committee—Messrs G. P. Williams, G. E. Mannering, F. Graham, A. M. Ollivier, T. Marshall, T. Johnson, and the officers ex officio ; auditor, Mr W. G. Rhind ; editor of journal, Mr Malcolm Ross ; librarian, Mr G. Mannering.
Correspondence was read from Captain Marshall Hall, A.C., F.G.S., F.C.S., as to the representation of the club at the Geological Congress in 1894, at Zurich, and suggesting the formation of a sub-committee to gain information on ice movement in" New Zealand — Captain Hutton and Messrs Brodrick and Mannering were appointed to take the matter up. From the honorary secretary Italian Alpine Club, cordially offering assistance to any New Zealand Alpine Club member visitiog their locality. — It was agreed to publish the letter in the club journal.'
The club now exchanges publications with the following kindred societies : — American Geographical Society, English Alpine Club, Scottish Mountaineering Club, Italian Alpine Club, Appalachian Mountain Club, U.S.A. (a first-class publication containing many splendidly reproduced photographs), Royal Geographical Society, Royal Geographical Society of Australasia, the French Alpine Club, Vesterr Alpen Club, Deutsch und Vesterr Alpenverein, Club Alpen Swisse, Vesterr Touristen Club, Gesellschaft Fiir Erkunde, Berlin, and others.
