Reed), 275 Retina 7.7 ( W. Brown), 33 King Harry 6.10 (Connop), 168 Kent 6.7 (Myers).
After considerable delay at the post, Mr Cundy let the flag fall to a rather uneven start, Kent being left at the post and Pegasus nearly so. When the field had fairly settled into their stride Revolution was in front, with Retina, King Harry, Vogengang, Clanranald, and Prime Warden next in order, and this position was maintained passing the stand. At the bottom turn Clanranald closed up a little, and at the same time attention was called to Prime Warden, who was racing with the leaders. Pegasqs and Kent were hopelessly in the rear. Entering the back stretch Retina was still in the van, with "Vogengang second, and Prime Warden next, then came Clanranald and Rosefeldt. The first-named of the last pair was disappointed twice in the race in attempting to get up on the inside. At the bend by the road Retina began to tire, and gave place to Vogengang, with Prime Warden next. Lindsay now began to move on the New Zealand Cup winner, and closed the gap between the mare and the leaders. The son of Burlington was the first to turn for home, and here both Clanranald and Rosefeldt put in their claims, but without avail, Vogengang winning by about three-quarters of a length. Clanranald beat Rosefeldt by a neck for second place, Prime Warden three lengths away fourth, King Harry last. Time, 2min 4-lsec. Totalisator, £2483 ; on the winner, 412. Dividend, £5 Bs. Mrs Bell, wife of the president, presented Mr Shcenan with the cup. Winners of the Wellington Cup.

Epilogue was badly left at the post, and Tartan had all the best of the start. Near ing the home turn the field closed, and Blarney coming very last on the outside slipped bis field, and won rather easily by half a length. Time, lmin 19|sec. Dividend, £3 11s. HACK HURDLES, Of SOsovs ; second horse Ssove from the stake. One mile and a-quarter. 304— Mr Henry's Meddler, 7.7 t 70— Mr M'Kenzie's Springtime, 6.12 ... ... t 35— Vainglory, 6 10 3 Five others ran. Krina and Rebellion cut out the running for half the distance, when the latter fell away. Kriua was first into the straight, but when fairly on the road home Derrett brought up the favourite, and won all • out by a length. Zanella, who had been last, came up very fast in the straight, and secured the barren position of third, Rebellion last. Time, lmin 16£ sec. Dividend, £2 16s.
Second Day — January 24.
The weather for the second day's racing was dull and very warm. The attendance was fair, but not equal to Monday. Kent's running in the opening event showed plainly that had he got away with the ,field in the Cup he would have been very handy at the finish. The Wellington Racing Club Handicap produced a splendid race, and Clanranald, being nicely handled by Clark, justified public confidence. The other events were well contested. The sum- or £6500 was put through the machines to-day, making £15 621 for the meeting, or £83 less than the Summer meeting last year. The starting was not of the best, aud at least ono race would have had a different result had Mr Cundy been successful with his field. Maher, who was thrown when Brooklyn fell in the Hack Hurdles, received a nasty shaking, but is in a fair w*y of recovery. The following are the results :—
JANUARY HANDICAP, Of lOOsovs ; second horse lOsovs from the stakes. One mile and a furlong. 139-Mr E. Halward's eh h Kent, by St. George— Red Rose, 7.11 (J. Armstrong) 1 15— Dr Reid's b m Dreamland, 8.10 (Morraghan) 2 91— Mr G. Smith's br g Johnny Faa, 8.10 (Matthews) 3 Also ran : 114 Liberator 8 10, 107 Retina 7.11, 74 Zanella 7.9, 92 Musket 7.7, 20 Sonator 7.2, 58 Revolt 6.12 [car. 7.0]. Mr' Cundy had considerable difficulty in getting the field away, and when the flag foil Musket and Retina had all the best of the start. After going a furlong, Kent took up the running, with Retina and Johnny Faa at his heels, and then came Senator and Dreamland, with Revolt whipping in. Along the back Retina fell away, and Johnny Faa was second, with Dreamland and Musket lying third and fourth. At the turn to the straight Kent had a commanding lead, and Dreamland, under the whip, set sail after him, but although he cut down Johnny Faa could not get up to Kent, who won rather easily by a length and a-half. Time, lmin 48£ sec. Dividend, £5 4s. Brown, on Retina, was fined £5, and Barry, on Musket, £3 for disobedience. HURDLE HANDICAP, Of 70sovs ; second horse lOsovs from the stakes. One mile and three-quarters. 240— Mr J. A. Holmeß's b g Clarence, byfTekoa, 11.10 (Stewart) 1 82-Mr T. Watts's eh g Oaklands, 10.5 (Kingan) 2 135— Mr K. M'Kenzie's br m Dromedary, 9.7 (Gravestock) 3 Also ran : 35 Jacob 9,1. Jacob led for a mile and a-quarter, with Dromedary, Clarence, and Oaklands following in that order at. equal distances of three or four lengths. Nearing the turn into the straight the field closed into a bunch, but turning for home Clarence drew away and won easily by three-quarters of a length, Jacob, pulling up, last. Time, 3min 29£ sec. Dividend, £1 16s. HACK HURDLES, Of 30sovs ; second horse ssovs. One mile and a-quarter. 168— Mr Prossor's Pumau, 10.12 1 139— Vivacious, 11.5 2 45 Brooklyn, the only other starter, fell — young Maher receiving a severe shaking. Pumau and Vivacious raced together until near the straight, when the former drew out and won easily by two lengths. Time, 2min 26£ sec. Dividend, £1 17s. WELLINGTON RACING CLUB HANDICAP, Of 200sovs ; second horse 20sovs and third lOsovs from the stakes. One mile and a-quarter. 474— Mr 11. Lunn's eh h Clanranald, by St. Leger— Scottish Lassie, 8.9 ... (Clark) 1 220-Mr M. Hobbs's br h Prime Warden, 9.0 (Cochrane) 2 163— Mr W. Douglas's b m Rosefeldt, 8.9 (Lindsay) 3 Also ran: 271 Vogeiißang 8.10 (Derrett), 125 Pegasus 7.10 (Barry), 72 Queen of Trumps 7.1 (Connop). From a beautiful Btart Queen of Trumpa led by half a-length from Clanranald, with the others in a bunch, except Pegasus, who was a couple of lengths away. At the turn by the river Queen of Trumps was a length aud a-half in front of Clanranald and Rosefeldt, after whom came Prime Warden and Vogengang. At the back the Queen had a slight advantage, with Clanranald, Prime Warden, and Rosefeldt | racing together, and Pegasus falling away. At the turn near the straight Queen of Trumps was done with, and Clanranald on the inside had a neck lead of Prime Warden, with Ro3Cfeldt third. Clanranald was firfct into tho straight, and the whip was taken out to Prime Warden, but the St. Leger horse had all the best of the run home, and won with something in hand by three-quarters of a length, Rosefeldt third, Vogengang fourth, Pegasus last. Time, 2min 12sec. Dividend, £2 10s. JUVENILE HANDICAP, Of 80sovs ; second lOsovs and third ssovs. Fivo furlongs. 208— Mr Hunter's g f Tartan, by Nordenfeldt— Maid of Athol, 7.7 (Connop) 1 146— Hon. J. D. Ormond's eh f Lyrebird, by St. Leger— Lyro, 8.2 (Cox) 2 129— Mr H. Redmond's eh f Epilogue, 7.7 (Barry) 3 Also ran : 197 King Wai 8.5. King Wai and Tartan were the first to break the line from an even start, but after travelling three furlongs there was little to chose between the field. Tartan was the first to enter the straight, where Epilogue, running wide, allowed Lyrebird to get .up. A grand race down the straight resulted in a win for Tartan by a short head. Time, lmiu ssec. Dividend, £2 18s. HACK HANDICAP, Of 35sovs ; second horse ssovs from the Btake. One mile. 334— Mr R. Ross's Princess Cole, 8.4 (Herd) 1 Mr J. Armstrong's Vivacious, 7.8 2 57— Mr H. SECOND WELTER HANDICAP, Of 70sovs; Becond horae lOsovs from the stake. One mile. 51 — Mr J. Freeth's eh h Revolt, by Treason — Mischief, 9.0 (J.Reid) 1 291— Mr O. A. Durie's gr g Musket, 10.3 . (Collelo) 2 77— Mr Jackman'a b h King John, 9.2 (Kingan) 3 Also ran : 240 Liberator 10.10, 220 Palliser 10.2, <2 Sedition 9.0, 38 King Harry 9.0. After several breaks away the field were despatched to a straggling start, of which Sedition, Liberator, and Palliser had the best, aud King Harry was left at the post. Along the back Musket, Liberator, Pftlliser, aud Sedition were racing abreast, with Revolt next, King Harry several lengths away. Nearing the straight, Musket drew out, and hia victory was loudly proclaimed, and it certainly looked a moral ; but half-way down the straight Revolt put in a determined challenged, and, fighting every inch of the way, just beat Musket in the last stride by the shortest of heads, King John a good third, and King Harry fourth. Time, lmin 47scc. Dividend, £16 Bs.
METROPOLITAN HANDICAP, Of lOOsovs ; second lOsovs and third ssovb from the stake. Six furlongs. 153— Mr H. Lunn's b f Persuasion, by Apre- - mont— Flattery, 6.7 ... (J. Rebellion got away with the lead, and soon put three lengths between him aud the field, but near the road Krina headed him, and Persuasion cloeed up. Krina led Rebellion by two lengths into the straight, where Persuasion came like a shot from a gun, and, smothering the field, won easily by two or three lengths. Time, lmin 16sec. Dividend, £6 4s.
