RAE'S JUNCTION.
January 16.— The telephone has reached here at last, but it is asserted— l presume jocularly — that there is not as much wire in New Zealand as would finish it as far as Island Block. It seems incredible that the department should allow themselves to get so short of wire ; but those who accept the assertion as fact allege that it is on account of the strike at Home. I am not sure whether we are connected direct with Lawrence or only with Beaumont at present, but, of course, it does not matter, as Beaumont is connected with Lawrence.
Crops.— Mr R. Woods, of Beaumont, has about as nice a looking crop of oats as anyone would wish to see. It is about 6ft high. It follows a very good crop of turnips last year. A good number of other settlers have very good crops also, but in the case of others again they are very thin. The turnip crop promises to be good. Mr Partridge has already reaped some rye this year, and I notice that some of the crops are getting the golden colour indicative of htneas for the harvest.
Accidents.— Mr A. fl. Tamblyn had a nasty capsize on Friday morning last. While coming up the hill between the Beaumont and the Junction loaded with empty fruit cases, the horses took a big bend too sharp. Mr Tamblyn fortunately escaped with only a few bruises. — While a party of six were coming from Tapanui in a spring trap, when at the Crookston School one of the wheels came off. In this case also none of the occupants were any the worse for their tumble. Fruit. — A good deal of fruit is going down just now, for, as I mentioned before, this year's is the best crop that we have ever had.
