ROXBURGH.
January 15.— The heat has been very trying for some time, and a real downpour of rain would be greatlyappreciated, except perhaps by the farmer?, whose crops are about ready for cutting. The spring and early summer rains, together with the heat, have had a powerful effect in increasing the fruit crop. I understand that never has tho fruit harvest been so abundant. Some of it, we hear, has been transhipped to Wellington. Fruit ought to be cheap in Dunedin this year.
Mining —The dredging claims are doing fairly well — that at Ettrick very well, apparently in the effort to turn over a new leaf with the New Year. Dividends have not, however, been numerous lately, I regret to Bay. The Amalgamated Hydraulic claim paid a dividend on the 10th inst., and is said to be on a good run. The Island Block likewise is doing well. The last report I have of the llise and Shine is that gold has been struck, and that the taking-out of another paddock or two will finally settle the question as to whether the claim will pay or not. My own opinion is that the spec, is right.enough.
