A severe engagement took place at Kassala between Italian troops and the dervishes, tbe latter being defeated with a loss of 4000 men.
Zanzibab, January 13.
Heavy fighting has taken place in Nyassa between the British and natives, and Commissioner Johnson has inflicted a severe defeat on the slave chief Makanjiru. ' January IG.
Severe fighting has taken place between the Mussnlmen and Protestants in Uganda, the latter being victorious. The territory of the MußSulmen has been assigned to the Protestants and Catholics. Washington, January 11.
Mr Carlisle, the Treasurer, has asked the Finance Committee of ' the Senate to authorise the issue of Treasury bonds in order to y avert a financial crisis. The monthly deficit is stated to be a million dollars.

The Coinage Committee of the House of Representatives have reported in favour of the Bland Bill, providing for the issue of silver certificates on a seigniorage of the bullion in the Treasury, amounting to 55 million dollars, and rapid coinage if bullion certificates are used to pay current debts. Some difficulty is likely to be experienced over the fight between Mitchell and Corbett for L4OOO, which had been arranged to take place on the stage of the Duval Athletic Club, at Jacksonville, Florida, on January 25. The sheriff, in obedience to instructions, has threatened to proclaim martial law in order to prevent the contest being carried out, but the local militia have intimated that they will refuse to adopt the Governor's orders.
January 15.
Two express trains collided at Hacfcensack, near Jersey City, owing to the points falling to act. The carriages were telescoped, and 20 persons were killed and many injured.

The insurgents bave captured the island of Oonoicoa. The loyalists bombarded the insurgents' hospital at Entuadus, killing 12 of the patients.
