NEWS FROM TRISTAN D'ACUNHA.

Gisbohne, December 11,

The barque Samarkand has arrived from Rio de Janeiro. Captain Whitson states that the vessel was detained at Rio for several days in consequence of the insurrection, and was lying in the Btream 200 yards from the shore when the bombardment began, the rebel fleet frequently taking shelter under his quarter. Showers of bullets came aboard the British vessel, and she bears a few marks of haviDg been in action. On the voyage the Samarkand called at Tristan d'Acunha. The natives boarded the ship, and stated that they were hard up, having had an increase to their population in the shape of the shipwrecked crew of an Italian barque, and the men who were washed ashore from the British barque Allenshaw. Their crop of potatoes had proved a failure owing to the rats. Captain Whitson supplied them with such food and clothes as he could spare. The population of the island numbered 58, of whom 43 are males and 15 females.
