The Power of a Rothschild.
Once upon a time the then h^ad of the house of Roth«child, though resident in this country, had a house in Frankfort. Now Frankfort was a free city, and, like o'her free cities, was upon a certain occasion "absorbed" into the kingdom of Prussia Troops marched into the towD, and for military purposes it was considered necessary to "requisition" every horse in the place. Amongst other animals, a favourite pony of one of the Rothschild children was seized. The child was inconsolable. The Prussian commander was inexorable. Finally the head of the house was appealed to by telegraph. In less than an hour a very great person in Prussia received this startling information ; " Unless my child's piny is sent baok within E4 hours I will break every bank in Prussia.' The "Prussian commander had a bad time, and mfanwhile the message sped to England: " Pony will be given up at once," Straightway there returned the imperious answer, " I Baid sent back,"
And sent back the pony was, under a guard of honour, and the disconsolate child, safe in the possession of its pet, slept peacefully again. — Home paper.
