Resolution Island Reserve. TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, — I understand fchat although Resolution Island has been scb aside as a reserve for native birds, no step 3 have yet been taken to stock it. The following extract from the Preservation Inlet correspondent's letter in the Southland Times of Ist Decembar would seem to show that; unless such steps are taken very soon they may be too late : — " How or by what means has the ferret, a species of vermin more objectionable than the rabbit, made his way here ? Two of the fierce polecat variety were seen a few days since on No. 9 contract of the tramway. Unfortunately they were not killed. Owing to these natural enemies the ground game is fast disappearing. A kakaps is seldom met with, and only once in a way a kiwi. Contributing to this extermination pi our native birds is the fact that most miners keep a mongrel dog, and let him loose when he ought to be on the chain. They will be sorry for this soon, for the ground game is a stand-by that many a prospector has owed his life to." — I mn, &c , Dunedin, December 4. Verax.
