TAIERI FERRY.

August 14.— The Taieri Ferry Literary and Musical Society met on Friday last to indulge in a debate on a seemingly simple subject : Which is worse, the man who can sing and will not, or the man who cannot sing and will ? By a curious piece of luck the subject fell by ballot to four young ladies to debate. To Miss Sherburd (Henley) and Mi3S Paterspn (Waihola) it fell to speak against the unwilling singer, and to Miss E. M'Kegg (Henley) and Miss Peattie (Taieri Few?) .to, decry the overwilling one. Miss Paterson being absent from home, had her place" supplied by Mi's Peattie. All the four ladies read first-rate papers in support of their views. There ' was a good attendance of members,' and many of those present took part in the discussion,* the proceedings taking vigour and interest from the forcible and logical manner and method. of the leaders. A vote showed that the unwilling singer was viewed with less favour than the other. Some new members were added,' and others renewed their allegiance. The next meeting will be a gentleman^ evening, when recitations, readings, essays, and musical offerings will be given. The meeting following that is also provided for, Mr Reid', of Milton, having promised a lecture. on "Light."
