Who Was the Fool.
There is an old Cumberland worthy named Tom H who has reached the mature age of 80, but his eye is not yet dim nor his rustic wit abated. A pert young fellow tried to play a trick upon him on the first of April, but the old man was not to bo caught. "Nay, nay, lad," he said, "it's no use. Tha wants to mak' an April fuil o' me. Noo, dost tha knaw how this April fuil business ficst begun ? " The youth admitted that he did not. " Did tha nivver read in t' prayer buik ?"
" Not as aa can think on."
" Weel, tha just look in t' place where it tells aboot Good Friday an' Canulemas an' see what's said aboot April fuil." Next day the youth sought Tom. "Aa can't find that in t' prayer buik," he said.
"Whoy, lad," answered Tom, with a huge cackle, in which a crowd of rustics joined, " aa didn't think tha could ; so tha mun be April fuil thasel' ! "
