Fat Cattle.— The entry to day— viz., 204— was the largest for some weeks jpast, but the quality forward was mostly of ' inferior to 1 medium. Bidding throughout the sales was spirited, and all pens were cleared out at good values. Prices for best quality show no decline, and we dp not anticipate any immediate drop for this class. Best bullocks brought £9 10s to £12 2s 6d ; medium, £7 103 to £9 53 ; light and inferior, £6 5s to £7 7s 6d ; best cows, - £8 10s to £10 2s 6d ; medium, £6 to £8 ; light and inferior, £3 103 to £5 15s.— Wright, Stephenson, and Co. sold : For Mr John Beattie (Strath-Taieri). 1 very prime cow at £10 10s, 2 heifers at £8, and l'do (small) at £6, also 3 prime steers at £10 5s each ; for Mr William Jaffray, jun. The crossbreds were made up chiefly of wethers ranging from fair to good, with nothing very heavy. Of the ewes there were a few pens very choice, one very good lot of Romney cross fetching from 17s 6d to 19s 6d. The prices obtained were just on a par with those of last week. Quotations : Good crossbred wethers, lfc to 18s 3d ; medium, 14s 3d to 15s Gd ; best crossbred ewes, 15s 9d to 17s ; extra prime, 17s 9d to 19s 6d ; medium, 13s 6d to 15s ; merino wethers, Jls to Us 6d.— Stronach Brothers and Morris sold : For Mr James Holmes (Waimahaka), a line of very choice Romney cross ewes at 17s 6d, 18s, and 19s 6d.— Wright, Stephenson, and Co. sold : For Mr James Wright (Broomlands), 108 crossbred wethers at from 15s 9d to 17s 6d, and 34 halfbred ewes at 14s; for Mr John Beattia (Strath-Taieri), 44 halfbred wethers at 16s 9d, 45 do (small) at 15s 9d, and 30 merino wethers at fiom lls to 11b 6d : for Mr James M'lntyre, 30 very heavy crossbred ewes at 18s ; for Mr William Sinclair, 70 balfbred wethers at 14s 9d.— Andrew Todd (on behalf of the New Zealand Land Association, Limited) sold : For Mr Matthew Baxter (Kuri Bush), 160 crossbred wethers and maiden ewes to 15s 6d ; for Mr Jas. Pigs.— The entry consisted of only 35, and they sold at prices equal to those of last week. Stores brought 19s 6d to 245/ porkers 28s to 33s 6d, baconers 39s to 52s.— Wright, Stephenson, and Co. sold 14 at quotations.— Donald Reid and Co. yarded and sold : For Mr Walter Blackie (Glasgow Farm), 6at 39s to 13s 6d ; for Mr D. Andrew, jun. (The Grange), 5 at 30s to 21s ; for Mr Thomas Lynn (Anderson's Bay), 3 at 19s 6d ; for Mr John Allan (Taurima), 14 at 52s to 395. Store Cattle are very scarce, and business is confined to a few lots, lots changing hands at v figures in sympathy with present prices for fat stock.— The Farmers' Agency Company(Limited) Bold 37 well-grown, forward-conditioned bullocks for Mr J. J. MAuley (Portobello), at £6 2s 6d to £7 7s. Store Sheep.— Only a small amount of business has been done during the past week. Inquiries are plentiful, but holders being now well through the winter are not inclined to accept prices lately offered. Country Sales.— The Mutual Agency Company of New Zealand (Limited) report as follows :— On Friday, July 28, we held our usual fortnightly sale at the Crown yards, Balclutha, for which a full entry of sheep and a few lots of cattle, pigs, and horses came to hand. Buyers were well represented and a good demand was shown for sheep and cattle, very few lots being passed during the day, and over 1000 sheep sold. Hoggets brought 9s 8d ; crossbred wethers, 13s 8d ; ewes, 12s Si ; cows, £5 53 ; other lines proportionate rates. At the same time and place we sold for Mr Maurice Coghlan a quantity of household furniture and effects, all of which were disposed of at satisfactory pricee. On Tuesday, August 1, our ■monthly sale at Palmerston took place. The entry consisted chiefly of dairy stock, for which there was rather less demand than of late. Sheepskins.— The good demand continues, both shippers and fellmongers operating freely ; consequently the usual weekly auction sales are fully attended, and sales animated. On Tuesday large catalogues were submitted and all lots offered were disposed of at full rates. Butchers best crbssbredß brought 4s lOd to 5s 6d ; medium, 3s lOd to 4s 9d ; butchers' merinos, 2s 6d to 3s 8d ; dry crossbreds (inferior to medium), Is 9d to 3s 8d ; dry merinos, Is 6d to 2s 8d ; full-woolled crossbreds, 3s 9d to 4s Od ; choice, 5s 2d to 6j 9d ; fullwoolled merinos (good), 2s 7d to 33 6d ; best, 3s 8d to 5s 6d ; pelts, 3d to Is 5d each. Itabbitskins.— A Btrong demand exists. The auction sales on Monday were well attended, and prices obtained for best winters showed a slight advance on those of last week, while other descriptions were sold at late quotations. Best selected winter does brought Is 5d to Is s£d ; mixed winters (mixed), Is 4d to Is 4Jd ; best bucks, Is 3d to Is 4d ; medium winters, Is 2d to Is 3id ; autumn, lOd to Is lid ; summer, 7Jd to 9d ; suckers and inferior, 3d to 7d per lb. Hides.— The local market remains unchanged. Last week's quotations may be repeated— viz. : For best well-flayed ox hides (601b and over), 2|d to 3d ; medium hides (in good condition), ljd to 2id ; light ljd to lid ; inferior and slippy, Id to Tallow.— For all descriptions there is a ready sale at prices last quoted. Shippers and buyers for local consumption are active. Quotations : For prime rendered mutton, 21s 6d to 22s 6d", medium to good, 18s 6d to 21s; inferior to medium, 14s 6d to 18s. Rough fat : Best mutton caul, 14s to 14s 6d ; medium to good, 12s 6d to 13s 6dt inferior, 11s to 12s percwt. ..,,,„ , Grain.— Wheat : This market is still dull, and I the local demand is slack. Stocks in stores are fairly large, but growers are not inclined to accept prices offering. A moderate amount of business has been done at— For prime milling, 2s lOd to 3s ; medium, 2s 8d to 2s 9d : inferior, 2s 6d to 2s 7d ; and fowl wheat. 2s 3d to 2s sd. Oats : The market this week shows a shade easier tone, although there has been no fall in prices,, nor is such anticipated. The fact of shippers bemgout of the market during the past week is no doubt the cause of the apparent slackness At auction on Monday best milling brought 2s" Id to 2s 2d; best heavy feed, 2s to 2s Id ; inferior and discoloured, Is lOd to Is lid. Barley: Business, in this line is confined to a few odd lots changing hands at, for prime malting, 3s lOd to 4s ; while forinferiorjrod medium there is no inquiry. Mill-

ing is comparatively easier to quit at 3s to 3s sd ; and for feed 2s to 2s 6d has been obtained. Potatoes.— Demand for these is limited, except for really prime lots. Best Derwents sell at from £5 to £5 2« 6d, and inferior £4 10s to £4 155 ; kidneys, £4 to £5. Chaff.— Market bare of good oaten chaff, and prices for this description very firm at present. Quotations : Prime oaten, £3 to £3 ss ; medium quality, £2 5s to £2 155 ; straw chaff, 25s to 30s per ton. Grass Seeds.— The demand for these is steadily improving, and prices are very firm at : For best dressed ryegrass, 4s 3d to 4s 9d ; medium, 3s 9d to 4s ; best cocksfoot, 4d to 4Jd ; medium, 2Jd to 3|d * Flax.— This market is dull. Quotations : Best, £16 to £17 ; medium to good, £14 to £15 10s ; inferior £10 10s to £12 103.
