M'CulWh), Kalydor 9.9 (Jenkins), Royal Oak 9.7 (Bourke). Betting : 2to 1 agst Shylock, 4 to 1 Trojan, 7 to 1 Ouida, 10 to 1 Kremlin, 12 to 1 Albert, 14 to 20 to 1 each Busaco, Frantic, Schoolboy, and Sir Wilfred, 16 to 1 Tyro, 20 to 1 Coral, 30 to, 1 Tayforth, Kalydor, and Quilp.
On the flag being, lowered they -moved off >*at a moderate pace, Frantic and Quilp at each end being the first to break the line, end Frantic led past the judge's box, with Tayforth, Busaco, Quilp, and.Kremlin just behind him and almost in line, a gap of a couple of lengths separating them from Sir Wilfred, Sbylock, Kalydor, and Albert, with Royal Oak last of all Frantio took them out of the turn.at a leisurely p«ee, and there was some shifting about for positions at the firet obstacle -a post-and-rail fence—as the'river side was approached. As the jump was' taken Albert' was slightly .in front of Frantic, with Shylock, Sir Wilfred, Trojan, and Ouida next. The stone wall near the abattoirs brought down Coral,' who had not been going at all freely up to this point, and the next obstacle I proved, fatal' to Kremlin's chance. Albert and Trojan continued to make the pace past the abattoirs and the sheds, with Sir Wilfred) Frantio, Kalydor, and Ouida well up." Ealydor on the outside ran up to the leaders at the fence in the bend, Brewer keeping the favourite well back among the rear division. When they had fairly turned into the straight; Trojan was in command, with Albert close up, and then, in close order followed Ouida (who was jumping beautifully), Schoolboy, Kalydor, Sir Wilfred, Frantio, Quilp, Tayforth, and Shylock, the rear being brought up by Busaco. Tho first obstacle of the stand treble was jumped 'by Albert; £and Trojan ' almost simultaneously, Ouida pressing them closely. All fenced well, with the exception of Quilp, who came down heavily, and was killed on the spot." At the stone wall and the logs, comprising the last two obstacles of the treble, Schoolboy moved up nearer the front, and Busaco rapped heavily I and fell back last again. The- pace was inI creased as they raced along the river side, j where Albert was sailing along ahead of the field, Schoolboy and Trojan running side by side a couple of lengths behind him, Ouida, going nicely, next, and then Frantic, Kalydor, Royal Oak, and Shylock. Trojan then got on terms with Albert, tae'pair making strong rikn- | ning from Schoolboy, Ouida, Frantic, Busaoo, and Kalydor, Brewer still being content to keep the favourite well back among the ruck. The leaders had a full head of steam on along the back stretoh, the order Jjeing practically unaltered, but at the abattoirs the colours' of Schoolboy were missed. At this point Albert was a couple of lengths in front of Trojan, with Ouida and Frantio following at similar intervals, then Sir Wilfred and Royal- Oak, the ' beaten division being spread over oat a lot of ground, with Tyro behind Trojan raced up to Albert at the sheds, Ouida being in clos9 pursuit, while Shylock was brought up into the succeeding position, Frantic and Busaco being the only others left with a chance^ The second last jump was negotiated by Trojan slightly in advance of Albert, who was apparently finding the pace a trifle too warm, but the Sydney representative kept well up, and Ouida was also in a good position. The race at this stage still looked open.' Trojan jumped the last fence beautifully, well • hi advance/of Albert, Ouida', Shylock, and Busaco, who were in close order. Albert blundered badly and came down on his knees, Nolan making a smart recovery ; 'but the mishap pub his mount out of the race. Shjlock also struck the fence, but did not lose - much gronnd. ' In • the meantime Trojan had taken a strong lead, which he held all the way up the Btraight, Sbylock being brought into second place, aud Ouida finding the pace too .warm.' The leader was full of ruuning, and though Shylock answered gamely to his rider's call, his blunder at the final fence had taken all the steam out of him, and he could not catch Trojan, who, easing up in the last few strides, passed the post four lengths to' the good.' Busaco, finishing strongly, was third, two lengths behind Shylock. Frantic was fourth, and five lengths further back came Ouida, Albert, and Royal Oak at oloss intervals, while nexb succeeded Tayforth, Kalydor, Sir Wilfred, and Tyro, cantering in as named, the last two broken down. ' Time, 7min4£seo. '
