A communistic scheme, with the object of establishing a. community in Queensland upon lines similar to the " New Australia " movement, is being promoted. Acting on instructions from Mr Henry Goldsfcone, a creditor, Messrs Devore and Cooper, of Auckland, have given notice to move under the "Companies Act 1882," and its amendments, on the petition of a creditor, that the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile^ Agency Company be wound up under secti6n 270 of the act. This section provides machinery for winding up a company registered in Great Britain. A meeting was held at Christchurch on Friday night to consider the unemployed question, the mayor in the chair. It was resolved to call upon the Government to place the sum of £20,000 upon the Estimates to reclaim Lake Ellesmere lands, as the Minister for Lands had admitted that 24,000 acres could be profitably reclaimed. It was also resolved to call upon the Government to subsidise local bodies in order that they might start relief works ; also, that in the event of the Government refnsing*to subsidise local bodies it be reminded that the same power that created canunoreate, There was some dissent to the last motion.
