PALMERSTON.

July 21.—" Constable Luke Mullaney, who has been transferred from here to Fairlie Creek, was the recipient of a very flattering address, accompanied by a substantial purse of sovereigns subscribed by the residents of the town and district. The presentation took place on Monday evening, when some 40 or 50 gentlemen, representing the judicial, legal, mercantile, and farming interests, were present to testify their respect and appreciation of the manner in which the guest had discharged his duties while stationed in the district. Mr J. Cunningham, the mayor, presided ; Mr Emerson, of the Bank of New Zealand, acting as croupier. The Chairman, in making the presentation, referred in highly felicitous terms to the manner in which Constable Mullaney had performed his onerous duties, and the general satisfaction he had given to all sections of the community ; and also gave expression to the general regret felt throughout the district by all classes at the constable's removal. Mr James Arkle also bore testimony to the very impartial and satisfactory manner Constable Mullaney had performed his duties as a police officer, and likewise as clerk of the Resident Magistrate's ( Court. Several other gentlemen also spoke in complimentary terms of the guest of the evening. Constable Mullaney, in replying, thanked the company for their attendance, and the speakers for the manner in which they had spoken of him. They had been altogether too flattering in their remarks regarding himself, as he was only fulfilling a duty incumbent upon him by virtue of his offices, &o. Some gongs and recitations were given by the gentlemen present, and altogether a very pleasant evening was spent,
