BANK NOTES. „ The Woodsido correspondent of ihe Taieri Advocate writes: — "As the season has now approached for trout spawning, large shoals of magnificent fish may be seen any time of the day in Fulton's creek. Now is the .time foe the Acclimatisation Society to send some ono to look after the interests of the ereok, as it is one of the finest spawn beds in Otago, and at this tim.e of the year poaching is generally indulged in." This year tlie Southland Acclimatisation Society has been successful in obtaining all its trout ova from' the bead waters of the Oretu About 200,000 have been placed in the boxes at* the Wallacetown hatcbery. On the morning of the 19fcb, at Port Chalmers, a deputation of fishermen was introduced by Mr E. G. Allen to Mr James Mills, M.H R., with a view to bringing under his notice questions affectiDg the establishment of a fish market in the city. The fishermen pointed out that if a fish market were established power should be* given to the City Council to. frame a by-law making it compulsory that all fi»h brought into? the city for consumption should pass through the market and be subject to inspection. Under the Fish Auction Act of 1886 the council had no power to enforce such a by-law, and it wast pointed out that fishermen and others were* desirous that the act should be so amended: as to overcome this difficulty. One of the deputation expressed the opinion that' it wonldi be unwise to make a law compelling all fish brought into town to pass through the market, inasmuch as those shopkeepers who possessed boats of their own and conveyed the fish direct from them to their shops would be hampered by such a regulation. Mr Mills promised to consult with the city members on "the matter, with a view to bringing it under ,the notice of the Government. Ib is understood that a petition is to be presented through Mr Mills to the Government, urging the Fish Auction Act to be amended in the direction indicated. It is wise to provide against emergencies, which aye liable to arise in every family.
