GRAIN AND SEED REPORT.
Messrs William E. Reynolds and Co., wool, grain, and seed agents, Stafford street, report for the week ending 19th July 1893 as follows?—
For the past week we have been favoured with very nice weather indeed for this season of the year, quite spring-like in its mildness. Wheat.— The continued dulness still prevails and there is very little changing hands. Millers are quite prepared to operate at quotations, but holders, realising that any further drop is almost impossible, are indifferent about selling. Fowl feed meets with a very good demand and sells at far above value as compared with prime milling. We quote : Prime Tuscan and velvet, 2s lid to 3s ; good ordinary. 2s 7d to 2s lOd ; good whole fowl feed, up to 2s od, and. broken 8s 3d.
Oats.— These meet with considerable attention from day to day, but prices are erratic, and at time of writing are perhaps hardly as good as they were on Monday, but we feel certain the lull is only momentary, for arrivals continue small and holders firm in their demands. Certainly to-day's prices are fairly high compared with those ruling at this season for the last three yeara at any rate, and it is questionable if we can look for any further advance unless some market responds more vigorously than has been the case so far outside the colony. ' We quote : Prime milling and feed, 2s Id to 2s ljd; good heavy feed, 2s to 2s Id ; ordinary, Is lid to 2s ; seed kinds, if very clean, up to 2s 4d (sacks sd, ex store). Grass Seed.— Ryegrass : It has rather surprised those in the trade to find stocks so light, and prices have in consequence advanced. Frommostcountry districts we learn the quantity required will likely be large, and if this is correct present quotations are more likely to advance than fall We quote : Prime old pasture, up to 4s 6d ; good heavy do, 4s 3d ; medium, 3s 9d to 4s. Cocksfoot is also having good attention and considerable lines have changed hands within the last week. We quote : Best, from 4d to 4Jd ; good mediumweight, 3id to 4d per lb. Clovers : These are now landing and already having inquiry, but mostly in the wholesale trade, it being just early enough for sowing yet. Potatoes. — These are surprisingly scarce, and best are selling up to £5 5s per ton in small lots, other sorts according to quality. > Kidneys are worth about the same money for seed. Chaff.— For prime the demand is very good and 57s 6d to 60s is being paid for this quality, while ordinary and medium lines are hardly bringing relative values. We quote same from 40s to 50s per ton.
