Tte quantity of ore crushed at the Waihi Gold and Silver Mining Company's battery, Thames, for the four weeks ended July 1 was 1605 tons. The value of the bullion is £5908. The Western Star says:—" As soonasth'e weather takes up Mr George Evans, manager of the Round Hill Syndicate, intends to construct 12 miles of new races. The construction of the Bludge channel, we hear, will also be commenced. This should provide a good lot of work at a very early date, ft is satisfactory to hear that the company intend to extend their operations, and it is an evidence that the yield of gold must be pretty considerable." , ,„ , , At an adjourned meeting of the Wardens Court on Monday, the application by W. INTERVIEW WITH THE GENERAL MANAGER. Auckland, July 11. From Mr Battley, the general manager of the Loan and Mercantile Company in New Zealand, the New' Zealand Herald has received the following information: — "The suspension is absolutely due to the recent and still existing banking crisis in the Australian colonies, and not to anything connected with the business of the company. As a company we have, in common with other financial institutions, all along held considerable deposits in Melbourne and Sydney, and, as a matter of course, these have been largely withdrawn. Confidence in every institution has been shaken, and the locking up of large sums by the suspension of banks has in many oases compelled people to withdraw their deposits [whenever,' they could. The suspension of bo many banks has also very much cramped ordinary financial resources for conducting commerce, and disorganised the facilities for exchange with England. The recent suspension of Goldsbrough, Mort, and Co., who carried on the same kind of businesa as this company, has also>ery greatly aggravated matters, and contributed materially to the causes which have brought about the suspension of the Loan and Mercantile Agency Company. There is no difficulty in regard to debentures. They have not affected the position at all or only slightly. Nothing has occurred in New Zealand to in any way contribute to the suspeasion. The business here has been conducted on safe, prudent, and conservative lines. The company holds deposits in New Zealand, but there have been|no withdrawals beyond merely the usual amount. There will be as little interruption of business as possible. The formalities necessary to reconstruction will have to begone through, and business will be resumed as usual at an early date. Every effort will be made to avoid inconvenience to the company's customers and to maintain the very valuable business which has been built up. The balance sheets issued by the company in January last showed the company to be in a good position. That position haß been maintained since, but suspension has been rendered necessary by the withdrawal of deposits, as above stated, consequent on the financial panic which has recently prevailed in Australia."
