THE VIKING SHIP FOR CHICAGO.
There is to be no end of maritime novelty about the great World's Fair in Chicago. Even the exprison hulk Success is to be included, if all be true. In the meantime it is interesting to note that a Viking ship, subscribed for by the Norwegians, has been built and launched at Sandefjord. The quaint little vessel is a counterpart of the interesting specimen unearthed a few years ago at Gokstadt, and represents the earlier type of Viking craft. The ship will be fitted down to the smallest detail after Viking fashion, with shields, oars, and steerboards, and will be manned by a crew dressed in the warlike, picturesque gear of the old Norsemen, who in such a craft probably first sighted America's coast, and certainly visited Greenland. With this interesting craft on view, perhaps side by side with the models of Colum bus's caravels which the Spaniards have sent out, Americans will perchance realise how close is their connection with mediceval Europe, despite the watery waste which separates the old world from the new.
