OAMARU COURSING NOTES. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
At a committee meeting of the Oamaru ■Coursing Club, held at the Globe Hotel on Tuesday evening, it was decided to postpone 'the May meeting of the club until a future date «wing to the small number of entries received, »nd in the meantime a deputation from the -club will wait on the Acclimatisation Society on Friday, the 12th inst., to see if some arrangement can be come to between the club and »oefety whereby owners of dogs can compete Jot the club's stakes without being called upon to pay the license fee. It is to be hoped that something will be done, as the license has always been a source of trouble to the club and owners of dogs, and it will be a pity if such a good sport is allowed to die out. If satisfactory arrangements can be made over the game license question the club will endeavour to run off a stake on the 18th inst., when it is to be hoped that •• lovers of the leash" will respond freely, as the committee have secured some valuable trophies to be run for.
A case of interest to racing men will come before the Dunedin Resident Magistrate's Court at an early date, and the evidence of the defendant (Mr J. Walls) was taken on Tuesday, at Oamaru, before Major Keddell. Messrs Mason and Roberts, totalisator proprietors, sue tfor £5, the amount they allege they put on the totalisator under instructions from Mr Walls. Mr Walls telegraphed to Messrß Mason and Roberts to put the sum of £5 on the horses Lustre, Gitano, and Dawn. On previous occasions, on telegraphing similarly to Messrß Mason and Roberts, he had always received a replj, but on the occasion out of whioh the case arises he received no reply, and concluded that the money had not been invested. The plaintiffs allege that they put the money on as requested, bnfc were too busy to reply to the telegram, and Mr Walls refusing to pay, sued for the above amount.— North Otago Times.
