Firbank's Belle Dora, 4yrs, 10.10 (MrTeague) 0 Mr Yates's Abyssinian, 4yrs, 10.10 (Lord Molyneux) 0 Betting : 3to 1 agst Lord of the Valley, sto 1 Dean Swift, 100 to 14- each Van der Berg, Emblem, and Correze, 100 to 8 Cadno, 20 to 1 any other. Emblem, Van der Berg, Forester, and Correze left the post in command, and over the opening obstacle the last-named took a clear lead from Van der Berg and Forester, with Dean Swift, Lord of the Valley, Abyssinian, and Emblem next, and Hippodrome settling down by himself in the rear. All were jumping well in the straight, and passing the stand the first time Correze was still attended by Van der Berg and Forester. Down the hill Forester retreated out of third place, and Lord of the Valley and Emblem were in attendance upon Correze and Van der Berg, until nearly a mile and a half had been completed. Then the casualties began with a dissolution of partnership between Lord Molyneux and Abyssinian, and soon afterwards Emblem and Miss Perkins came down at the water. The ditch fence near the members' gate proved fatal to Belle Dora, and upon reaching the stand the second time Correze was three or four lengths clear of Van der Berg and Lord of the Valley, and then in single file followed Hippodrome, Dean Swift, Cadno, Reformation, and Forester. Breaking a stirrup leather, Correze lost a lot of ground round the top turn, and when he drew up fourth a mile from home, he was divided by Dean Swift from Van der Berg and Lord of the Valley. To these the issue had been confined long before Cadno rolled over at the water, and with Correze spun out in the next three furlongs, Lord of the Valley and Dean Swift attempted to close with Van der Berg in the bottom. Neither effort was successful, for although Lord of the Valley once reached Van der Berg's heels the latter broke well away from the four-year-old at the penultimate fence and won by eight lengths ; bad third. Time, 9min 50|sec.
