The colony had to pay one-half the damage sustained by the poorer portion of the sufferers by the recent flood in Wellington, as, the money collected was handed ovtr to the Benevolent Institution, and a Government subsidy of pound for pound thus secured.
In reference to the claim put forward incorrespondence in the Melbourne Argus that to Mr W. B. Rhodes belonged the honour of forestalling the French in the annexation of the South Island, the friends of Mr Rhodes who knew him well say that he never hinted at such a thing. - It is believed that the new version of the story put forward in the Argus must be a case of mistaken story on the part of the writer, who has confused the late Captain Rhodes with? the captain of H.M.S. Britomart,
