CO-OPERATIVE PUBLIC WORKS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Wellington, September 22.
The Hon. Mr Seddon intends that the contraebs given under his public works policy this year shall be carried out on the co-operative system. He has received testimony from two sources as to the value of this sysbem. Nearly 120 men employed at Middlemarch, on bhe Ofcago Central railway works have, signed a memorial to. the Minister urging that the Government should not abandon the scheme for 30-operative labour. They state that they firmly believe in its soundness, and that it is the best system on ■which works can be undertaken. In a letter to Mr Seddou the chairman of the Auckland Liberal Association, Mr Beetham, states that whilo on a visit to Mokau recently, he formed a very high opinion of this plan. Tho men, he says, were contented, and in fair weather make good wages, while the work is splendidly done. Mr Seddon says that he is not likely to abandon the system, and that, notwithstanding the recent attacks upon it, he is more than ever persuaded of its success.
