CRICKET.

NOTES BY SLIP.

There ssems to be more interest taken in cricket in Southland this year than has hitherto been the case. A Southland cricket associaciation has been formed for the purpose of handicapping teams and arranging matches for the season, and I am pleased to hear that there seems to be every prospect of all the clubs in Southland joining. In order to further the interests of the game, the Invercargill Cricket Club have decided to send a team through the country at the beginning of November, playing Lumsden, Queenstown, and Arrow combined, and on the way home by the Waiinea line playing Gore and Mataura, the trip occupying about a week. The Invercargill Cricket Club have secured the services of the Canterbury Interpro. crack Mr W. J. Cottenll, who has been transferred to the local branch of the New Zealand Shipping Company and who will be a valuable addition to the team. The Star Club will also be strengthened by the addition of several new members to its ranks. The association look forward to playing annual Interprovincial matches with Otago shortly. The Irish team of cricketers now on a vi3it to America beat New York by four wickets. A cricket match between Williamson's Opera Company and the Auckland Cricket Club ended in a draw. The company has several first-class Australian cricketers in its ranks. A meeting was held in the Oval Pavilion on tho 20th inst. for the purpose of forming a cricket club ; Mr J. Fleming in tho chair. After some discussiou it was resolved that a club, to be called the Dunedin Cricket Club, be formed ; and the northern half of the Oval was secured for the season. Mr Hendley's services as coach were also secured. Mr J. Miller was elected secretary, Mr Heudley treasurer, and Meaßrß

Fleming, Hendley, and Miller a committee. It was agreed to join the Cricketers' Association, and it was decided to hold a meeting next Friday at 8 o'clock for the purpose of electing a match committee and office-bearers.
