TAIERI FERRY.

September If).— The Literary and Musical Society held its usual fortnightly meeting in the schoolroom on Friday evening last, Mr Peattie (president) in the chair. The evening was devoted to such a programme as well bore out the title of the society. Instructive and amusing readings and recitations were given by members and friends, aud a variety of mu-ical items— songs and piano and violin solos— enlivened the meeting. From 9.30 till close on midnight the lightsome dance was led on. After a kindly cup of tea and its appropriate accompaniments, the meeting broke up to meet again in a month, lhe reason of the postponement was that before the work of the eveningbegan the President said that he had been desired to ask the society to forgo" its next meeting night in favour of the members of his evening classes, who desired to close their session with a public entertainment, to be held that evening, the 30th inst, aud this was agreed to.
