ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
The monthly meeting of the council of the Otago Acclimatisation Society was held at the Government Buildings on the afternoon, of the 10th and attended by Messrs J. P. Maitland (chairman), A. C. Begg, W. Carlbon, G. P. Clifford, J. Edgar, T. Brown, R. Chisholm, R. Campbell, W. Cuningham Smith, P. F. Stoddart, F. Deans (manager), D, Russell (secretary). A letter was received from the Southland Society stating that a resolution was passed at last meeting of the society to the effect that the Government be requested to proclaim the Aparima river open for trout fishing, subject to the approval of, the Otago Society. The society desired to know whether the Otago Society approved of the opening of the river, pursuant to the resolution in question. — It was' resolved, on the casting vote of the chairman, that the river be not opened for another year. Mr Alex. Rutherford, hou. secretary of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society, wrote with regard to the importation of insectivorous birds from America, and to the closiug of certain lakes so as to preserve wild geese thereon. He stated in reference to the former matter that it would be wise to wait and see what was the result of a shipment of " prairie ; chicken " which had been ordered for the Wellington Society. In the meanwhile he would get thti mail agent to make further inquiries, about songbirds and let the Otago Society know the result. With to wild geese, he stated that there were a nuraber of such geese i scattered about in the colony, but he did not think it would answer to make a general regulaI tion about them. There would, he thought, be i no .difficulty in making special regulations for special watera, such as the Tuakitoto, Kaitangata, and Waihola lakes. — The letter was simply read. It was resolved that the Government be recommended to appoint the following as rangers : — Andrew Hogg, Water of Leith ; J. Sim, Dunedin ; G. Fraser, Dunedin ; and S. M. Robins, Mataura. The season for trout fishing was fixed from October 1 to April 5, and the season for pe'ren fishing.from December 1 to April 15. It was agreed to fall in with the arrangement made at the conference of societies, held at Oamaru, that each society should confine itself to the issue of licenses in its own district, and not to sell to anyone residing in another district.
