Dr Philip Maclogan, brother of the Archb!shop of York and of Sir Douglas Maclagan, of Edinburgh, died at Berwick in June lasr. He was a distinguished botanist, and in early life was in the Army Medical Service.

A millionaire and his wife have joined the Salvation Army. TheyareMrand Mrs George Montgomery, of S-in Franoisco. Mr Montgomery owns mines in Mexico and huge estates in California. He is a finely-builb man, over 6ft high, with clear blue eyes and dark beard and hair. Mrs Montgomery is about 30, and she has a sweet and winning face. They both wear the ordinary uniform of the " Army."

Admiral James Stoddart, one of the few survivors of the'Cninese war of 1842, who died in June last at the age of 78, was third Bon of the late Rear-admiral Pringle Stoddart, one of Abercromby's officers in Egypt in 1801, and entered the navy in 1827. After serving in various vessels he was promoted to his lieutenancy in 1838, and in 1841 was appointed to the Cornwallis, the flagship of Sir William Parker, the Com-mander-in-Chief in the East Indies. For his exertions the following year on the coast of Cbina, where he served on shore at the capture of Woosung and assisted at the reduction of Shanghai, he received the medal and was promoted to the rank or commander.

William Hogg, the author oE •' That Hielau' Cjo " and other poems, was a cowherd, a miner, a contractor, and a flasher. All of these occupations he had to pursue for a living, but he wrote verse tor the love of it, and his contributions to the local press were numerous. An "in memoriam " volume of his verses has been published by Divid Bryca and Sop, Glasgow, and will be found well worthy of perusal. The p~emsaress in number, many in homely .Doric, and all characterised by touches of tenderness, pxthoa, or humour, according to the mood of the writer and the nature of his subject. Hi? meditative face forms the frontispiece, and the cantrips of the "Hiilan'Coo" are suitably illustrated.
