THE MIDLAND RAILWAY.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Wellington, August 9,

The Midland Railway Company presented today, through Mr Guinness, a new petition of a most voluminous size setting forth in minute detail full particulars of the past transactions aud elaborate arguments founded on the premises laid down. The grounds on which the company pray for redress are :—(1): — (1) The proclamat on reserving land for mining purposes ; (2) the regulations of the Govt-rnment injuriously affecting the company ; (3) the delay in respect of the deviation at Lake Brunner ; (f) the delay in consent to the incline ; (5) the refusal or delay in tho extension

of the time for the completion of the line ; (6) the taxation to which the company has been subjected. On these grounds the company pray that a special committee may be appointed to consider the petition and to report thereon.

Nelson, August 9,

At a meeting of ratepayers in the Central Buller district, held at Murchison, the following^ resolutions were^ carried unanimously :—: — " (1) That thi3 meeting views with alarm the proposals of the Midland Railway Company in which they seek a modification of their contract which virtually means an abandonment of their contract to construct a line down the Buller Valley. This^meeting therefore calls on the Government to enforce the original terms of the contract. (2) That in the opinion of this meeting the further locking up of the land is fraught with great evil to this district. During the last six years settlement has been completely stopped ; and it is the opinion of this meeting that the land should be immediately thrown open to settlement if compatible with the Government contract with tho company."
