ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
The police received intelligence yesterday that a man named John Barry, 40 years of age, had been drowned in the Taieri river. The deceased was a single man, and resided with his parents at Otakia. The body has been recovered, and the police are inquiring into tho circumstances of the case. A telegram has been received at Lytfcolton to tho effect that a young man named John Bops, son of Mr J. Ross, second master at the Lyttelton Borough School, had been drowned in the Waitara river, North Island. Deceased, who was 20 years of age, was a very promising young man, and one of tho members of the Milsom Land Settlement Association. He left Lyttelton in company with a number of other settlers about 12 months ago to commence -work on his new holding. At the time of his death he was in the employ of Mr J. B. Milsom, and it is surmised that he was drowned while crossing the river near Furangi while going from Mr Milsom's homestead to his block of land. Deceased was a native of Lyttelton, where he was deservedly popular. The Tuapeka Times reports : — An assault of an aggravated and dangerous character took place at Edie and Kirkpatrick's claim, Horseshoe Bend, on Friday afternoon last. From what %%w e can learn of the affair, the assault originated ,in an angry dispute about a pipe, during the cqur.se of which one of tho parties rushed at the other with a hand-saw, and dealt him a couple of savage blows, one across the face and the other on the back of the head, felling him to the ground, where he lay for some time unconscious and bathed in blood. On recovering consciousness, #je injured man managed to drag himself to one of the miyeip' huts\in the vicinity, where, it may be easily conjectured, his appearance iv such a condition excited the greatest alarm. A .cursory examnaation showed that he had received two ghastly wounds, and being in a low state from loss of blood, it was deemed advisable that he should be taken to Lawrence without delay. He arrived at a late hour the same night and was taken to the Tuapeka Hospjtal and his injuries attended to by Dr Withers, under whose skilful care he is making favourable progress. The assault, we understand, will be made the grounds of a District Court action, in which damages for a substantial sum will be claimed.
