LUNATIC ASYLUMS REPORT. Wellington, July 14.

Dr Macgregor's annual report ou lunatic asylums was presented to-night. There were 1797 persons under restraint on the Ist January. Three hundred aud forty-four were admitted during the year, 86 re-admitted, and 383 were discharged or died. The percentage of cures was 37"14. were no serious accidents during the year and no suicides.

Respecting Seacliff Asylum, Dr Macgregor in his report says :—"lt: — "It is in a thoroughly satisfactory condition. Everything is going on in an orderly and systematic fashion. The patients are clean, well clad, and well fed. Dr King's adoption (with the inspector's sanction) of a less nitrogenous diet has had excellent results as to patients' health." Dr Macgregor complains that this proper and beneficial course has been attacked by ignorant outsiders who could not appreciate the value of the reform. He also protests against the unfounded clamour raised on tho strength of false allegations as to escapees.
