Masters' Tournament.
The following game was played in the Masters* Tournament of the British Chess Association Congress :—
NOTES FROM THE FIELD. a Lasker, aided by his excellent memory, follows move by move a game played at the Manchester Congress of the 8.C.A., 1890, between Dr Tarrasch (White) and Mr Mason. b In tho same game, Mason played here 10...KtIt 4, an inferior move which he now rectifies by the text move. c The exchange of this bishop was effected in order not to have his queen's bishop disturbed and the knight pinned ; but White, in retaking with the R P, obtained an open X R file, which he afterwards cleverly utilised for an attack. d Perhaps Q 2 would have been a better square for the queen, because, after White's Q Xt was posted later on at X 3, Black need not have disturbed his bishop. c A good move. It liberates the X Xt, and threatens B-Kt 5, or Q-Kt 6. / A somewhat disagreeable necessity, since it permits White to play K-Kt 2, and so to utilise his rooks on the open X R file. g Also forced. h Weakening; but forced since White threatened 23 Kt-B 5, eh, followed by Q-R G eh, Ac. i So far the position is somewhat in favour of White; but Black should nevertheless be able to draw it, if bent upon such a course. Mr Mason at this juncture had hoped for a better result, and in defending himself was ready to assume the offensive should White give him the opportunity (with P-K 84, for instance). That Is perhaps the reason of the weak move in the text. The rook is here quite out of play, and remained so for the rest of the game. j The losing move. Black did not contemplate tho possibility of White's possible—not to say probable—sacrifice. k This decides the issue of the game. Herr Lasker played this game with first-class judgment and skill.
