MINING.

The mine manager of the Amalgamated Waipori Deep Lead Gold Mining Company (Limited) reports, for the week ending 7th May, as follows :— " I finished the paddock on Tuesday night, and cleaned- up the boxes on Wednesday, obtaining 470z 4dwt gold (already reported). All the plant has been got out of the paddock on to the surface, and lam now busy extending the pipe line. The weather on Friday and Saturday was unpropitious for our present work, so that only one hour's work has been done during these two days." The manager of the Roxburgh Amalgamated Company reports, for the week ending 7th inst,, as follows :— " Both elevators have been working full time, only stopping occasionally for repairs. j In No. 1 paddock I am erecting a new line of trestles, as I intend to remove the large elevator close up to the face. I have to clean up a piece of ! bottom yet, which will take me till Thursday or I Friday; before I start to remove both lifts. I shall keep No. 2 in full work while No. 1 is under removal. I shall wash down No. 1 when I have finished cleaning in bottom. Water is very plentiful just now ; there are hundreds of heads , going to waste."

— At Bristol, England, a labourer who, for a wager attempted to drink 12 half-pints of beer in 25 minutes, dropped dead after taking seven. Gambetta's father remarked shortly before his rather recent death that his celebrated son's remains were more scattered that if the Germans had blown him to pieces from one of their cannon. Gambetta's brain is in the museum of the Anthropological Society at Paris ; his heart is deposited underneath the momument at Ville d'Avray, the place where he died ; and the remainder of his body was buried by his father at Nice.
