WAIKOIKOI.
May 7.— A harvest Lome given by the Koi ycung ladies, and celebrated in Messrs Reid and Spark's barn, came off on Friday night under very unfavourable auspices so far as the' weatherr had anything to do with it— otherwise, the whole affair was admirably-got up and carried through as only the young ladies of the 'Koi know how. The barn, which is 45ft by 18ft, and excellently lined, is the place for a thing.of the kind. Allwent merry as a marriage bell when, hark ! some-, one struck the '.'.deep sound" while in proposing a vote of thanks to Messrs Reid and Spark and Mrs Reid he said that he thought if there wefe more trees planted in the district there would be more marriages. The speaker was also of opinion that there should be nice seats erected beside the trees. The decorations of the barrt were tasteful, —branches of Pinus insignis, liiacrocarpa, and spruce interspersing with portions' of oat and wheat sheaves, while turnips, carrots, &c., were suspended from the ceiling. Messrs Spark and Reid have been here over 15 years, and as the happy young people passed round the hosts noted the march of progress with delight. The dancing was in the hands of Miss Reid, than whom no better could have been wished. Mrs R. Weir and Miss Grey, and Messrs Scarlet, Wham Murdoch, J. Cooper, and James Barr favoured the company with singing at intervals. Mr James Cooper ably attended to the musical side of the house. Ihe eatables were excellent. Hearty votes of thanks were accorded the young ladies for the perfect manner in which they had so agreeably attended to those of the opposite sex. ; Arbor Day.— A meeting is called for Monday, at 8 p.m;, at the 'Koi schoolroom, to see what., steps shall be taken to establish an arbor day for Ofcago. I hear on good authority that our 'local ped." is the mover in the matter, and already_he has every reason to take heart and go ahead. He has been promised 14 trees, and has received a subscription. The -affair is taking immensely, and all hands and the cook are going to have a holiday and plant trees. No doubt many of the nurserymen will offer a consignment. Mr R. Birrel last year gave our telaohor a handsome present of fruit trees. Perhaps the. Otago Board of Education will bo asked to appoint a day. < - • 'Koi M.l.S.— Captain M'Kenzie has kindly corisented to give an address on Wednesday night on his recent trip to the North Island. Loud Lyon's Progeny.— l have- it on good authority that a filly foal and a. yearling colt, both got by Mr J. R. M'Kenzie's Lord Lyon, realised 28g« and 45gs respectively. .
