Notes from Reefton. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
Reefton, May 7, Stock Exchange report :— To-day's battery returns comprise those from the Globe, Progress, Cumberland, and No. 2 Dark batteries, aggregating 9020z amalgam for top plates only in each case. The crushings are of an excellent and highly payable order, and the month's operations open with every promise of the same good results which characterised those of April. The dividends paid this week by the Globe, Cumberland, No. 2 Dark, and United Alpine total L 3600 'sterling, an item which will hardly fail to catch the investors' eye. The week has been somewhat dull and uneventful as regards fresh items of mining news, although crushing operations are well distributed over the field, and the different mines on stone are looking as well as could be wished, for several properties are mentioned as having improving prospects as work is proceeded with, and certainly a new development or so would be especially acceptable just now. No very material change in the condition of the share market has token place. Marketable lines are limited to a few stocks, but then it must be said they are firm at forward prices, and parcels are hard to get hold of at rates offering. Big River have had a further gradual rise, and appear to-day at an advance on last quotation. Cumberland remain about the same, and the battery is sending in regular returns showing a splendid average, quality of quartz. Exchange are not being much dealt in just now ; Globe are firm at about their usual figure, and have inquiry now and then. Small parcels of Lyell Creek have been placed at low rates; Lord Edward and No. 2 Dark- have been in fair demand- all ■ the week, with fewoffering. This week's return shows an improvement ; Progress are in better mention, doubtless upon the marked increase in the weekly battery yields. Russell buyers offer Is without business, and United Alpine are wanted to-day at l6s 6d, and buyers unsupplied. Other lines are without any material alteration. May 8. The following are the returns for tho past week :— Alexander Dredging, 12oz 6dwt gold, 13oz 18dwt amalgam for 74 hours' dredging ; Cumberland, 2480z amalgam from 79 tons ; Globe, 188oz amalgam from 175 tons ; No. 2 Dark, 16loz amalgam from 70 tons ; Progress, 3050z amalgam from 190 tons.
