In a recent match, a player offered to resign a game, in which he failed to notice that he was stalemated. A correspondent of the Evening News and Post wrote to ask Mr Gunsberg for his professional opinion as to whether or not a player not perceiving that he was stalemated could resign. Mr Guusberg replied that "where a win was impossible, no win could be claimed;" and hence "Tvhen a player was stalemated he could not resign the game that was already determined." Lady Chess Players. — Now that the North Canterbury Ghess Club has a meeting room of its own, it is the intention to admit lady members.
