SOUTHLAND NOTES.
The first round of the town matches will begin on May 18, when the Star and InvercargillClubswill meet. Thel.F.C. boys reckon that they Will make things rather warm for the Star, butilthiuk that their reckoning is based more on" their defeat.of the Dunedin Club, and on the fapt that the Star has lost no less than six of last year's team all of whom have gained interprovincial honours, than on their judgment'of the play of the respective teams. I think" 'the team that beats the Star this year will be the. bestjeyer placed on the field by an InvercargiU club. Ek'ensteen refuses to play forward for the Pirates, and" still remains at three-quarter like a pair of spectacles on a blind man— a useful article, in the wrong place, and an encumbrance there. , ' , -The Pirates played M'Kay at half-back in their trial' match last Wednesday, and judging from bis play he should make his mark there. On- April 29 the members of the Pirates Club presented to Mr H. Rodgers a handsome cap in recognition, of his services to them. The presentation was a well-merited one, for Mr Rodgers has been the mainstay of the team for the last two years. • Last Wednesday the Star played a trial match, when a great improvement was shown in the play, especially by some of the young players from whoso ranks will be choson the men to fill" the places made vacant by the retirement of Cuff, Jenkins, J. Murphy, Planks, De Jp'ux, and Hannah. During the game one of the wing' three-quarters was conspicuous for haying scored more tries and talkod more than all' lie others put together. f • Crossbar.
