It is reported that Orme was insured for LIOO.OOO (not L 10.000) against his starting for the Derby, and it is believed that this fact led to his being poisoned. Evidence has been secured that'before the alleged poisoning of the co}t tbpre had bpen a very large amount of betting both in England and abroad in small amounts against his starting. It is stated that the Duke qf Westminster intends to start Orme for the Derby at all hazards, if. only to thwart the suspected swindlers who are expecting to make money out of the horse's illness. Porter (trainer), besides several veterinary surgeons, insist fin saying th,at the hqrqe was poisoned with merpury. May 7. I Orme's namo is not mentioned in the Derby betting. May 8. The Duke of Westminster states that it is now found that it will be next to impossible to get Orme fit for the Derby. * A rumour is current that the hor6o was poisoned at the instigation of a well-known backer of La Fleche. The poison was administered in a lozenge, which Orme chewed, and whiph. 'blistered his tongue, May 10. Mr Porter (the trainer) asserts that he and Mr Williams (the veterinary surgeon) are convinced Jihat Orme has been suffering from a strong irritant poison, and not from his teeth. May 11.
