LAWRENCE.

The Tuapeka Mouth Punt.— Mr J. P. Maitland (chief commissioner) and Mr A. M'Kerrow (member of the Land Board) were in this district last week, and visited Tuapeka Mouth and Rankleburn to meet settlers ie a punt site across the Clutha in that locality. Due examination was made of the two sites selected, and evidence taken. I understand a report will be furnished to the Minister of Lands on the matter, and he will decide the site. Messrs Maitland and M'KeTow were highly pleased with the large amount of settlement in the Tuapika district.

Catholic School.— Owing to the attendance at St. Patrick's School increasing, the staff has been added to, and Miss Mulhern, daughter of the head teacher, appointed mistress. The young lady has good testimonials, and well qualified for the position. Shooting. — A handicap shooting contest among members of the Lawrence Cadet corps recently took place for prizes contributed by Captain M'Keich (Lawrence Rifles), Captain Darton (Cadets), and Mr H. Jjickson, consisting of a silver cup and four silver medals. The contest was a very keen one, and some good shooting eventuated. The presentation of trophies took place on the school ground, Captain M'Keich handing them to the winners. Messrs J. P. Maitland (land commissioner), A. M'Kerrow and M. Fraer (Education Board), and Mr G. Reid (ex-school teacher) were present, and greatly admired the excellent way the cadets went through their various drill exercises under the direction of Captain Darton. The successful prize-takers were : Cadets Jas. Stenhouse, E. M'Keich, Sergeant Wilson, Cadets Crisp and Black
