WALT WHITMAN.
Strong singer of the democratic might ; In thrall to Nature's s\veet, imperious spell : Yet looking straight at life, and marking well, With strenuous pity, all sad human plight ; Calling not evil good nor darkness light ; Staunch, rugged soldier in the war with hell ; So blithely sure a coming age will tell Of trampled error and triumphant right ! Thy vistas here were spacious, but their range To-day is ampler : for thy soul set free Is made aware of i-eaclfes vast and strange : Spirit-infinitudes o'er land and sea Meet thy untroubled ken ; nor is the change, Which baffles many, fraught with fear for thee. Dunedin. i ' S. T. S. — Poet: "Can you tell me the cause of these pains I have iv the legs ? " Doctor : " May I ask where you live ? " Poet : "In an attic room, sir." Doctor: "Then the pains are room-attic."
