RAE'S JUNCTION.
Ootobbb 24.— The soiree, concert, and ball came off here on Frldaynigat last, when there was agreat gathering, some of those looming from a long distance—Tuapeka West, Beaumont, Dunrobln.'.Mlller's Flat, Moa Flat, &o. The committee had appointed, two— Miss M'Donald and Miss Biohardson— to go around 'the district [to get whatever they possibly could for the soiree , and tbe canvasser* did not leave out a single house, with the Result that there was very little to buy by fche committee, and I think they could hardly have appointed better can't assers, as they collected items ranging from a ham of over 301b weight to a dozen eggs. The tables were presided over by Miss Stewart and Miss Milne, assisted by Mesdamea Biohardson aud Milne, who made all moit we'eome. After the good thing ton the table had been done justice to tbe concert was commenced. Mr Mackay, cbairmau of tbe sohool committee, occupied the chair, and Bonga were very well sung by Miss Clark, and Messrs Corkey, Smith, Buttler, Tuoker, Moyle, M'Ounu, and others. Mr J. Buttler brought the conoert to a close by giving the sailor's hornpipe in costume, an item well appreciated and very well done. Dancing was then com- ! meuced, to music supplied by Mr J. Chrhtenson, our old friend from Beaumont, on the violin, and a better performer I understand is nottobe found in Otago. The danoing was interspersed with songs by Miss J. M'lntyre, Messrs Buttler, Smith (Tuapeka West), Csrkey and M'Beath (from Wellington), and a recitation by Mr Bates. Mr Alexander M'Pnerson acted as M.0., and a great deal of the pleasure of the meeting was due to n'm The committee have to thank the canvassers, tbe ladies who gave so liberally, and those who assisted at the tables as well as the i muticau and M.O. It is expected that the proceeds will put the committee out of debt. Religious.— A weekly service is held in our sohool now by our Presbyterian brethren, under the Bey. B. Telford, of Boxburgh, who is assisted by otherselders, &c. Faurr Pbospbcts.— The fruit crops are looking very well ju»t now both here and at Beaumont. The winds and frosts do a good deal of damage before the fruit gets ripe. Mmnra.— l am sorry to hear of the want of success of tbe dredge Hope of Ouukeld. Since she has been at Pomanaka and fitted up with steam she hat ' done very little gold getting. At preient Bhe is laid up waiting for the river to rise, so that they may I take her a little further up stream. !
