SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS.
The monthly meetiDg of the School Comnniv sioners of Otago was held on Monday, aud &*<* attended by Mr J W. Bain (in the chair), the Hon. W. H. Reynolds, M.L.C., Messrs J. Green and T. Dennißton. A dr^ffc agreement for Mrnber license to Mr W. T. M'Farlane on ran 202, Greenvale, was approved as submitted. MrGretn reoommended that part; oF s^ot'on 23, block IV, Nor*h Harbour and Blueokin district, comprising one acre, at present occupied by the Good Templars' Company, be off- red at auction for 21 years at an up^efc of £1 prr annum, subject to a payment of £80 for improvements in favour of the company. Agreed to. Mr E. Earle wrote sfating that as he could not find a payr.blß seam of cojil on the piece r,f land on ran 393, which he agreed to iet^e, he could not see his way to take if; up — Received. The Secretary reported that he h*d been advised that section 22, blook 111, M-nzies' Ferry, was a small piece of ground, and scarcely worth applying for as . a reserve.— Referred to Messrs Denniston and Bain to report. A telegram was received from the Minister of Land.B to the effect that the Government did
not see their way to phc-e the. lapsed vote for the Waikaia railway on the Estimates.— Received. An application was reoeived from Messrs G. A. and P. Mem, lessees of section 1, block VII, Toi-Tois, requesting a reduction of ren*, aad ifc was resolved to make a reduction of 2s 6& per acre for three years from the 14th May last. Tbe Southland County Council forwarded a copy of a resolution agreeing to have the road line through preemptive right section 1, block 111, Wendon, vested in the Crown for the purpose of a public roa<*. — Received. Mr J. L MDonald wrote stating that the engineer to the Southland County Council proposed to make a slight deviation in tbe road line through the pre-pmptive right qu run 193, and the secretary stated that tbe owner:! of tba land riid not see their way to approve if *he proposed deviation. — It was decided that tbo secretary i-hould submit a sketch for the coutjideration of tbe Southland County Council. Mr W. HencWson, Gore, wrote (on behalf of Mr D Gilldnderp) applying for permission to transfer the lease of sections 18, 19, and 20, block VII, Whikais, to Mrs Ann Marchison. — The commissioners ref olved that they could not sanction the proposed transfer, but th»t they would agree to Mr Gillanders Bub-leasiDg. __ The sitting of the Otago School Commissioners win resumed at the commission era' office, Colonial B»nk building?, at 11 o'clock on Tuesday i morning, and continued until 4 pm. There were present : Mr J. Walker Bain (in the chair), Hon. W. H Royrolds, Mr J Green, trad MrT.Denniston. In addition to formsl and co^ mittee business, the folio wi*Dg matters were dealt with : — It was resolved to open run' 194, Wendon, for settlement, and in connection with this matter it, was decided to appoint Mr B, Dobson, C.E., to make a preliminary survey of the land with a 1 view to its irrgation. The cotnruifsioac-ra decided that the village settlement named Waiparu, lately surveyed into sections, Bhould be offered by auction at Riversdata on a date to be fixed by the secretary. A letter was rec ived from the railway com- ' missioned to the effeot that the dam complained of by Mr Instone, the lessee of section 55, block VIII, Jacobs river, had been erected in consequence of Mr Instono'a action in diverting the natural watercourse — The Secretary stated that he bad forwarded a copy of the letter to Mr Instone, and had received a reply by telegram to tbe effect that a new drain was being made. The monthly report of Mr J. L. M'Donald was received and the applications for transfers mentioned therein were granted on the usual terms. An application was received from Mrs J. Walph, who desired permission to remain in the old schoolhouse on section 10, block XIII, Invercargill, until the new year. — It was resolved to inform the applicant that the sections would be advertised in November, and that she must be prepared to give up possession early in December. With reference to section 2, block 11, Winton, it was resolved to cancel tbe lease and to reenter into possession of tbe property, unless immediate payment of rent was made. Accounts amounting to £61 2a 5d were passed for payment
