BOWLING.

■iiiiliilii iiiiHinlil li rnmiliiiiHHUiMltMMHlijtf utftrftrih«miUß*fca«. " ' " " NOTES BY JACK. Mr J. Nicholson, vice-president of the Kftit&ngata Olub, has presented to the club a pair of beautifully finished bowls as a priza to the winners, of the , Oolta" competition. Bowls are played in Italy with round balls. The prinoipal points of peculiarity are : Tbe player throws or lobs the ball underhand, with the knuckles to the front, bo as to give the effeot of " sorew." The player is allowed to take a step in any direction from the mark (a point, not • a line) whioh is selected by the thrower of the jack. If the player elects to knock out the jack frosi the adversary's balls, he has a' right to three steps to get up steam. Good players usually prefer a fairly uneven ground, suoh as a country road. Such greens as they have are more like Bkittle alleys. As the game can be played almost anywhere, it might, I think, ba introduced into country townships with advantage. , At the Timaru Qlub's annual meeting the report showed that the olub i.s in a most satisfactory condition, and the membership numbers 53. In the past year about £200 was raised to form a new green, and just now tbe members are specially subscribing £50 to erect a pavilion. The new green is an excellent one. The club will open the season on November The Sydenham Olub has 78 members on the roll, 23 of whom,, are ladies. The estimated inoome for the next 12 months ia £65, which is considered sufficient to pay off all liabilities and working expenses, and leave a balance in hand at the end of the year. The treasurer's statement shows that; tbe initial expense? incurred in Btarting the club had been nearly paid off, and had the arrangements made *at the last annual meeting relating to special sub- : floriptions been carried out, a pavilion and other requirements would have been already provided, and the, club, would have been froe of liabilities. At tbe annual meeting, held last week, 10 new members were eleoted. The following officers were chosen for the ensuing Beason :— President, Mr James Forrester ; vicepresident, Mr J. Baldwin j hon. secretary, Mr A. A. Oatnpball; hop. treasurer, Mr H. Ejßsell ; bowling committee— Messrs Allison, Meikleham, and. Brew; tennis committee— Misa Baldwin, Messrs Beare and Oottrell* bowling delegates, Meesrs J. R. Dodds, (Danedin) and Throp ; tennis delegate, Mr T. W. Bafire ; auditors, Messrs Booth and Staples. Tb9 Auckland season was opened on the 17th. -The green was in splendid condition, and the alterations and improvements effeoted during the old season have rendered it extremely attractive. In the absence of the preside at the teams were ohosen by the vicepresident and the secretary, the latter proving victorious by 27 points, the totals baing 55 and 82 respectively. _, At the opening, of tbe season at Wellington there nan an assembly of between 50 and 60 players, and eight rinks took part in the contest. An interesting contest took place, resulting in a victory for the president's aide by 193 points to 134. Just before the first jack w,as pitched, the members -assembled round the pavillion, from which the president addressed a, few words of welcome, and wished the club a pleasant season and success against other Bimilar institutions whioh it might meet. The season was opened at Obristohurch on Saturday by some informal play on the Christcburoh green, and a.matoh President v. president on that of the Canterbury Olub. The green of tbe Ohristohurch Olub has been improved by tbe removal of a number of trees which, having grown rather high, had oast too muob shade on the green. Their plaoeß are now occupied by posing shrubs, The buildings have all been painted and renovated where necessary, making the grounds very oheerful in appearance. Three rinks took part in the match on the Canterbury Club's green, tbe President's side proving victorious by '.75 to 56. At the Dunedin Club's green on Saturday a match was played between sides chosen ,by the secretary nod treasurer. The weather was all that could be desired, and the, green was in fine order. There was a good attendance of spectators, and the lawn tennis courts and fives courts were kept going during the afternoon. For the benefit of players a bathroom has been fitted up, which cannot fail to be appreciated by devotees of tennis and fives, whioh appear to be gaining in popularity with the younger members of the club.
