AUCKLAND TOPICS.

(Fbom Oub Own Cobbespondent.) Auckland, Ootober 27. Beyond appointing the Hon. E. Mitchelßon aa a delegate to the conference; the special committee meeting of the A.R.C. last Friday did nothing. I fanoy the only matter our club wants settled is the pony and trotting question. What is wanted is uniformity of aotion amongst the metropolitan clubs. The D. J.O. is considered the greatest sinner, as they take under their wing trotting, which does not come properly under the heading of racing. Aucklanders generally are surprised that the Dunedinites have no trotting clubs proper. Pony owners are anxiously awaiting the deoision of this conference. Our Gnineaß will provide more than ordinary sport this year, as the three-year-olds engaged are, if I except The Workman, an interior lot and pretty equal. I take it thus early that what ever beats The Workman wins the Guineas, and his most dangerous opponent is Brigand, who arrived yesterday from Gisborne looking rather stale. Still he is a mere pony in stature. Rumours have bsen rife all the paat week relative to the condition of Major George's horses, one sporting writer even sympathising with his hard luok. I get. pretty fair information as a rule, and take my word there is very little wrong with any of his horses. Last Friday afternoon Fiesole, Coalscuttle, The Workman, and Reprisal (the latter reported tobe dangerously ill) did onoe round the course proper outßide the; hurdles in rattling good time, and all pulled up Bound. Again this morning at daylight. Major George being present, Ooalacuttle, Reprisal, and The Dreamer did a trial over a mile and a-half. At the mile post The Workman joined in and led all the way, romping home easily, with The Dreamer next. Both Ooalsouttle and Reprisal appeared all right. I fanoy The Dreamer will be a hot favourite for the Prince of Wales Handicap. Cissy, full sister to Trenton, and one of the grandest mares south of the line, only egragioußly messed about, was yesterday scratched for all her engagements, and will visit the imported Oastor. Hilda is also an unlikely starter. The likely starters for the Guineas are The Dancer, Brigand, Tullocb, The Workman, Lady Belle, Vieux Robo, Woqdbine, and Resentment. There are about 40 horses in training at Ellerslie at present. The _ course proper ia receiving a top dressing. Ruddy, the caretaker, intends to have it more beautiful than ever for New Year ; and as a large influx of buyers from Australia is reported to be likely to result in view of Mr Morrin'a sale of yearlings on the 4th of January, IJllersKe will be seen at its best. As the King Cole— Rosalind colt is to coma up in January, I expect Mr Redwood will send up a batoh of yearlings for Bale again, I still hear good aooounts of the Ramarama — Rosalind oolt for the 0. J.O. Derby. In fact my informant states that Mr Redwood has a second Black Rose in pickle. The Pakuranga Hunt Olub held the final drag of the season last Saturday. ■ Prior to starting the hounds and members were photographed, and on all Bides it waß voted the best season the club have bad for years. I am. afraid the much-talked of ball by - way of winding up the season will fall through. In Bending Colonel Fraser'a opinion re the totaliaator tax I abated faofcs, but personally I do not think he is correct. In fact I am sure be is wrong. His little bit of advice did the Hunt Club out of £52. I bear the Auckland Trotting and Pony Association are likely to have two strong supporters, or delegates subrosa, at the conference in the persons of Oolonel Fraser, M.H.R. for the Thameß, and Mr F. Lawry, M.H.R. for Parnell. I fancy they will hardly support the A.R.O. recommendation. Mr J. Marshall's filly Puwerewere, full sister to Oraokshot, baa grown into a slashing fine animal. Good judgea report her as showing a great deal more quality than her brother. We shall, I regret to say, not have the pleasure of seeing her perform at Ellerslie, as Mr Walters' name, which appears on the forfeit list of the Referea, ia more than likely to lead J.Q some trouble. The nominations appear in the name of Mrs Walters, and the offioial calendar inserta Mr W. Walters, who has nothing to do with the horses. Mr L. D. Nathan'B Laolantiß has broken down completely. He had an old friend last year in tha shape of a leg. Leading bookmakers quote Paris and Malvolio 8 to 1, Oorreze 10 to 1, Pigeontoe, Highborn, and Strathmore 16 to 1. Private advices re the St. Albans stable point to Strathmore as good gooda for the double. I strongly advise it, with a atromy point for Oorreza or Pigeontoe. For tha O. J.O. Derby Flindere ia being asked for here, and without personal knowledge I may Bay he is considered a moral by some knowing birds. J ° The Auckland A. and P. Association hold their show on the 6th and 7th. Entries closed to-day, and exoeeded in numbers the utmost anticipations of the oommittee. The Dancer is supposed to have aa outaide show of winning our Quineaa. He is trained by Mr James Scan, of Lady Emma Notoriety, ,

Wally Clifford has arrived, and looks wel* —quite well enough to do Lebel jußtice at the C.J.O. meeting. He tells me that Gollan's horses will be pretty forward by Melbourne Oup time; also that the uncomplimentary remarks re Sternohaser'a running in the Oaulfield Guineas were unfair. They applied to Aster, Mr D. S. Wallaoe'a horse. Sternchaser must not be despised. »* 1 i. Pim *~"S ariß is a red hot favourite fo* the Melbourne Oup here.
