Joseph Dicks, lately landlord of the Waltham Arms Hotel, Sydenham, was arrested on the

express train at Oamaru on the 2ad charged with endeavouring to abscond from his creditors. He had been adjudicated a bankrupt that day at Christohurch, and a warrftlt was immediately issued for bis arrest, which was accomplished by Detective O'Brien and Sergeant O'Grady. Dicks had close on £1000 on him and also a quantity of valuable jewellery. The Waitemata County Council passed a resolution protesting against the provisions in the Slaughterhouse Act Amendment Bill restricting country settlers from killing meat for domestic use and disposing of the residue. They also condemned the proposals of Mr JacksonPalmer, M.H.R, in the amendments in the Counties Act Amendment Bill, providing for graduated rating on absentees from the province and from the colony. Mary Annie Hill, who cat her throat at Auckland on the 31st ult., died at the hospital on Monday. Deceased was 60 years old, and the wife of George T. Hill, of Lake Takapuna. She bad cancer in the eye, and feared that she would be sent to the lunatic asylum. Richard Walsh, bailiff of the Auckland R.M. Court, who shot himself on Friday, was greatly worried by domestic trouble. His wife died lately, leaving six young children— one an infant a month old. Deceased was born in

Auckland, and his father was for some years sexton at the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Bymonda street. His mother still oqrvivefl, and

added to his domestic troubles. Poor Walsh received a summens on Friday to Bhow cause why he should not support his mother. Walsh, who was 41 years of age, was insnred for £100 in the National Mutual Life Association of Victoria.
