September B.— At the annual meeting held In June the Licensing Committee reitricted all licenses to 10 o'clock. At this meeting the extension to 11 o'clock was again granted. The bench oon»isted of Meßsra Alfred Dolamore (chairman), Hagen Hewitt and Woodyatt ; Mr Brewer refusing to take part in the proceedings on the ground that he might act as auctioneer for a dealer in liquors. The police renort was favourable, but was opposed to the extension of the hour of keeping open till 11. Sergeant Fleming ■aid he believed that the public generally did not want an extension of the time of keeping onen There were no trains after 9, and even if there were travellers and boarders were at liberty to get whatever they wanted at any hour. Mr William Henderson, solioitor, appeared for John O'Eane, of the Southland Hotel, and advooated the extension of opening till 11 on the ground that many public meetings were held in the town, some in the Town Hall and some in hotels, and people had to rush their buiJneM through In the hotels or adjourn be-

fore 10. On Saturday night the shops were open till long after the hotels, and some of the shopkeeoers wanted refreshments before going home Thirty of the most respeotable inhabitants had signed his application for extension, and he could have got ud a strong petition in favour of his clients. After a short retirement the bench announced that by a majority they had decided to grant the extension to Borough Council.— Vacanc'ei occurring through the retirement by rotation of Councillors Palmer Carmody, and Wm, Henderson. Messrs Carmndy and Canning have been returned unopposed, the only contest being for the North Ward, the candidates being Messrs J. B. Dick and Wm Henderson. No publio interest whatever has been taken In these events.

A Question ov Municipal Besponsibility.— Yesterday a writ for £550 damages was served on the Goie Corporation, the plaintiffs being Mr and Mrs Booney, old residents of Southland, who came to live at Gore In the early part of tbe jear. The statement of claim alleges that la9fc March a ditca about 6ft deep in Surrey street, Gore, was dangerous owing to the corporation having uugleoted to keep it free from vegetation, coucealiog its existence; that there was no fence or anything to indicate its existence or its dangerous nature, and that the plaintiff* were. Unaware of its existencn ; and that Mis B oney fell Into the ditch and broke one of her legs, dislocated the ankle of the same leg, severely injured her other leg, and sustained a shock to her nurvous system, and ott er permanent lnju» ies. Mrs Booney claimed £SOO damages, and Mr Booney £50 for expenses incurred by him for medical attendance, medicine*, and surgical appliance*, &c The oasn will prob»bly come on for trial ad the sitings of the Supreme Court at Invercaigill at the end of the present month.
