AUCKLAND ITEMS.

(FfiOM Orjß Own Cobbespondent.)

Auckland, .August 25. ,

The racing of two-year-olds in the early spring s a subject that has many times given rise to warm discussion, and a race of that character being inoluded in the A. E.G. first Spriag meeting, to be held in September, has drawn forth an indignant letter from Mr John Marshall. It will be remembered that a couple of years ago the Australian Jockey Olub cut all suoh races out of their Spring programme, and one of the strongest reasons urged iv that direction by the late Hon. J. White was that the youngsters were scarcely matured enough to be raced iv the month of September. When we find that horsea of tbe calibre of Oarbine and Abercorn were raced severely as youngsters, those who hold the extreme opinion that two-year-olds should not be raced at all have a bit of a poser presented to them ; but then again it mutt be conceded that bustling two-year-olds along so early as September is calculated to do much barm, and it would have been well had the A.8.0. erased the race from the programme. Re the parties who invested £130 in the purchase of Raglan in the hops of getting a splendid return for their money, It is intended to send the so,n of Cap-a-pie to the stud this season, and put him into training next year. The horse, however, went »o badly amiss on two occasions that lam very doubtful aa to his ever standing a severe preparation, though after teeing old Ariel win the third AucKland Cup after his thorough break-down ia 1878 I have always einon Deen rather chary of writing off a horse as dead to the turf until suoh has been proved beyond a doubt. Mr T. Morrin having declined to take the b--ood mare L-idy Norab, Mr Bobbe'.t cabkd over to Sydney offering fcha daughter of CatJogan and S< eppe for tale, aiid a« a recult Sit S. Horderu secured her at (it Is aaid) £500. The mare, who is this year in foal to Nordenfeldt Is, I understand, to be shipped to her new home next w eak.

Mr J. Marshall haa selected the name of Pu were were fir his filly by Nordenfeldt f rom Pungawerewere. This Is very appropriate, as the daughter's name is synonomous with that of her dam. both meaning ipidery.

Markinob is the title selected for tbe yearling dolt by Nordenfeldt from Bryoina, who along with her foal, I may here remark, passed into Mr Marshall's hands at the disposal of the Sylvia Park stud for 250gs. Bryoina has proved barren to Nordenfeldt, and is this year to be mated with the Musket horse Hotchklss.

The North Auckland Racing Olub, whioh has its headquarters at Mount Hamilton, Waikafco, and which is one of the best managed of our country clubs, is coming out of its ihell during the forthcoming season, and a« a commencement it has been decided to extend the summer meeting to two days, at whioh £650 is to be given in added money. Writing to an Auckland friend, Mr W. R, Wilson stated that Mersey (dam of Carbine) is unmistakably in foal to Uordenfeldt, but that Naiad (sister to Lurline) and Pearl Ash (dam of Pearl; are considered to be doubtful. Mr Wilson states that Zalinski, Strathmore, and Steadfast are all doing well, and of the trio it would seem at present as if Strathmore would be the earliest to hand,
